Sister Joan Roach, OSU


Cincinnati – Roach, Sister Joan (Also known as Sister Kathleen). Joan Mary Roach died peacefully at Mt. Notre Dame Health Center on December 24, 2021, at age 83. Beloved member of the Ursulines of Brown County for 65 years. Sister Joan is the sister of Deborah Roach North (Stephen) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Sister-in-law of Jerry Wiedemer, and aunt/great aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Anne Doyle Roach and John Roach and her sisters Sheila Roach Wiedemer and Mary Roach. She earned a B.A from Mt. St. Joseph College and an M.A. from Fordham University. Sr. Joan began her ministry as educator at St. Louis School in Owensville, Ohio, and Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati. She then traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to teach at Pius High School. Later, her adventures included ministering in Human Service Programs and creating a Guardianship Program for Allegheny County in Pennsylvania. In addition, Sr. Joan’s involvement with issues of elder abuse and pre-school programs for children of working mothers became focal points with those living in the local area. Sr. Joan served in Pastoral Care and the Ethics Committee at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta and Allegheny General Hospital in Pennsylvania. Returning to Cincinnati, she engaged in pastoral ministry at St. John Church in West Chester and St. James Parish in White Oak. She was dedicated to and supportive of efforts to disrupt Human Trafficking in the Cincinnati area. Joan enjoyed Irish humor and always keeping an eye on her family and friends. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on January 15, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Vivian Church, 7600 Winton Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45224. The Mass will be live-streamed. Arrangements are being handled by E.C. Nurre Funeral Home Bethel, Ohio.
